Programmbeschreibung / Programme Summary

Die Projekte in dieser Forschergruppe haben als gemeinsames Ziel das Studium von quantenstatistischen Phänomenen und Wechselwirkungen in Quantengasen. Zum einen sollen entartete Quantengase (Bosonen und Fermionen) mit paramagnetischen Atomen und Molekülen erzeugt und ihre speziellen Eigenschaften studiert werden. Dabei werden optische und Radiofrequenz-Kühlverfahren sowohl theoretisch als auch experimentell untersucht sowie die Erzeugung eines Bose-Einstein-Kondensats in einer kryogenen Falle angestrebt. Zum andern stehen Experimente und theoretische Arbeiten zu niederdimensionalen Quantensystemen im Mittelpunkt. Neben zweidimensionalen Elektronensystemen auf kryogenen Oberflächen sollen auch eindimensionale atomare Quantengase erzeugt und studiert werden.

The projects in this research unit have as a common goal the investigation of quantum statistical phenomena and interactions in quantum gases. On the one hand, we plan to produce degenerate quantum gases (bosons and fermions) with paramagnetic atoms and molecules and study their specific properties. This work includes theoretical and experimental investigation of optical and radio frequency cooling mechanisms as well as the realization of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a cryogenic trap. On the other hand, experiments and theoretical studies of low dimensional quantum systems are another major perspective. Besides the investigation of two dimensional electron systems on cryogenic surfaces, the creation and examination of one dimensional atomic gases is pursued.
