Programmbeschreibung / Programme Summary

Das Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) betreibt mit dem Bohrschiff JOIDES RESOLUTION in allen Weltmeeren ein geowissenschaftliches Bohrprogramm. Die Kosten für das Programm werden zu 60% von den USA getragen, die restlichen Mittel stammen von Deutschland, Großbritannien, Japan, Frankreich, China und zwei Länderkonsortien (Australien, Kanada, Korea, Taiwan/European Science Foundation: Belgien, Dänemark, Finnland, Island, Irland, Italien, Norwegen, Portugal, Spanien, Schweden, Schweiz und die Niederlande). Der jährliche Mitgliedsbeitrag Deutschlands in einer Höhe von 2,95 Mio US$ wird gemeinsam von DFG und BMBF geleistet. Wissenschaftliches Ziel der Bohrungen im Rahmen von ODP ist die Rekonstruktion der Entstehung, Dynamik und Deformation der Erdkruste, der Entwicklung des Klimas und der Ozeanographie während der erdgeschichtlichen Vergangenheit und die Erforschung der Prozesse und Wechselwirkungen zwischen Meeresboden, Ozean und Atmosphäre. Ein umfassendes Verständnis der Entwicklung der Erde soll zu einem verbesserten Erdmanagement und zur Sicherung der Versorgung der Menschheit mit mineralischen und Energie-Rohstoffen beitragen und neue Ansätze in der aktuellen Klimaforschung liefern. Das Schwerpunktprogramm organisiert und finanziert die Beteiligung deutscher Forscher an den Bohrfahrten und ihre Forschung an dem gewonnenen Daten- und Probenmaterial.

The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) conducts a geoscientific drilling program in the world’s oceans with the drillship JOIDES RESOLUTION. The program is financed by the USA (50 %), Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, China and two consortiums of other countries (Australia, Canada, Korea, Chinese Taipei/European Science Foundation: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands). Germany’s annual contribution to the program funding amounts to US$ 2.95 million as part of the budgets of the DFG and BMBF. The objective of ODP is the reconstruction of formation, dynamics, and deformation of the Earth’s crust; paleoclimate and oceanography, and the investigation of the interaction between the sea floor, the oceans and the atmosphere. The general understanding of the Earth’s development is intended to improve the Earth’s management and guarantee the supply with natural resources for mankind and to contribute to the understanding of natural climate variability. The program organizes and finances the participation of German scientists on the cruises and their shore-based studies of samples and seafloor data collected during the cruise.
