Reading, Literacy and the Media: The Socialization Perspective

Das Schwerpunktprogramm setzt sich mit Fragen der Lesesozialisation in einer Gesellschaft auseinander, in der Informationstechnologien und neue Medien einen immer höheren Stellenwert gewinnen. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, ob das Lesen nicht trotzdem als Schlüsselkompetenz gelten kann und muss, d.h. ob und in welcher Form die Lesesozialisation überhaupt erst die Voraussetzungen für die aktive Teilnahme an einer Medien- und Informationsgesellschaft schafft. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellen sich Aufgaben, denen eine Lesesozialisationsforschung nur auf einer breit angelegten, kooperativen und interdisziplinären Basis nachkommen kann. Das Schwerpunktprogramm hat folgende Ziele: die Untersuchung der Bedingungen, Formen und Leistungen der Lesesozialisation im Hinblick auf generell-historische, individual-ontogenetische sowie kontemporär-systematische Strukturen und Prozesse im Kontext des Medienwandels.

The focus of this priority programme is on the inter-relation between reading and socialization in the context of our media society, a society which is characterized by the continuing importance of information technologies and new, electronic media. Does reading, despite those developments, still count as a key competence? I.e., is it reading socializations which shapes those very conditions which must be met if an individual is to actively participate in a media and information society - and, if this is the case, in what way does it do so? It is against this background that the tasks for research on reading socialization emerge, which in turn require a broad, cooperative, and interdisciplinary basis. The aims of the priority programme are as follows: to study the conditions, forms, and achievements of reading socialization with respect to general historical, individual ontogenetic, and contemporary systematic structures and processes in the context of a changing media environment.
