Programmbeschreibung / Programme Summary

Das Schwerpunktprogramm beinhaltet die fächerübergreifende Thematisierung von Akkulturationsprozessen in bestimmten antiken Landschaftsräumen durch die verschiedenen altertumswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen. Räumlich steht mit der heutigen Türkei und dem angrenzenden Schwarzmeergebiet eine Region im Zentrum der Untersuchungen, die aufgrund der historischen Entwicklung und guten Quellenlage für derartige Fragestellungen hervorragend geeignet ist. Drei Themenfelder bilden als ’Kernbereiche’ das inhaltliche Rückgrat und gewährleisten den thematischen Zusammenhalt des Programms: 1. Die exemplarische Erforschung der Geschichte von Siedlungen/Städten, 2. Wandel und Beharren mentaler Verhaltensmuster, 3. Wege und Bedingungen von Kulturtransfer. In methodischer Hinsicht erfordert die Vielfalt der auszuwertenden Quellen verschiedene Projekttypen, insbesondere variabel gestaltete Feldforschungen, sozial- und kulturgeschichtliche Untersuchungen auf der Grundlage schriftlicher und bildlicher Quellen, architektur- und kunstgeschichtliche Studien sowie die typologische Analyse materieller Hinterlassenschaften unterschiedlichster Art. Die Ziele des Programms liegen nicht nur in Erkenntnisfortschritten für die betreffenden Fachwissenschaften und die Geschichte des Altertums insgesamt, sondern auch in der Überprüfung von Akkulturationsmodellen auf ihre Anwendbarkeit in den Altertumswissenschaften.

The priority programme is concerned to use an interdisciplinary approach to investigate forms of acculturation in a specially selected area of the Ancient World. The territory of modern Turkey and the neighbouring coastal regions of the Black Sea were chosen as the main area of investigation because of the excellent source situation for such research offered there. Three fields of study form the framework of the programme and are aimed to guarantee its thematic integrity. (1) The investigation of the history of specific settlements or urban areas as model studies of acculturation. (2) Change and continuity in mental habits. (3) The ways and conditions under which cultural transfer takes place. Methodologically the great variety of source material to be worked on demands different types of detailed projects, which include in particular flexibly conceived field research, the investigation of written or iconographic sources for social and/or cultural history, architectural and art-historical studies, as well as the typological analysis of all available material remains. The objectives of the programme are not merely to achieve advances in knowledege within the participating individual disciplines and the history of Antiquity as a whole, but also to test the applicability of existing models of acculturation for the study of the Ancient World.
