Dynamics and Regulation of Plant Membrane Transport during the Formation of Cell-Specific and Organ-Specific Features

Programmbeschreibung / Programme Summary

Ziel des Schwerpunktprogramms ist das Verständnis der Regulation und der Dynamik von Membrantransportvorgängen, die für die Entwicklung oder Ausbildung zell- und organspezifischer Eigenschaften in Höheren Pflanzen essentiell sind. Nicht eingeschlossen sind Projekte über Transportprozesse, die für Interaktionen von Pflanzen mit anderen Organismen nötig sind oder die der Energiegewinnung und -umwandlung dienen, sowie Projekte über Struktur-Funktions-Beziehungen und die Identifizierung und Klonierung neuer Gene. Folgende Themenbereiche werden angesprochen: 1. Das Phloem: koordinierte Regulation des Transports von Wasser, Ionen, Zuckern, Aminosäuren; Kompetition von Zellen um Assimilate und Ionen; Rolle von Transportern für Wachstum und Entwicklung. 2. Sinkorgane (insbesondere Wurzeln und Samen): Entwicklungsabhängigkeit der Transporterdichte; Steuerung durch Licht, Temperatur und Phytohormone. 3. Schließzellen: Abhängigkeit der Transportprozesse von der Versorgung mit Kohlenstoff und Stickstoff; Steuerung durch Licht, Temperatur; Vernetzung von Signalwegen. 4. Transportprozesse an Plastiden: gewebespezifische Regulation; Rolle der Membranen; Anbindung von Transportvorgängen an Stoffwechselprozesse. 5. Übergeordnete Regulationsprozesse: Einfluss von Membranlipiden auf Transportproteine; Ca2+ und zyklische Nukleotide als sekundäre Botenstoffe; Exocytose. Als Versuchspflanzen dienen Arabidopsis thaliana, Nicotiana tabacum, Solanum tuberosum, Zea mays, Hordeum vulgare und Vicia faba.

The aim of the priority programme is the understanding of the regulation and dynamics of membrane transport processes essential for the development and formation of cell-specific or organ-specific features in higher plants. Transport processes necessary for interactions of plants with other organsims or for conservation or transformation of energy are not included. This applies also for projects dealing with structure/function relations or with the identification or cloning of new genes. Specific topics of the SPP are: 1. The phloem: coordinated regulation of the transport of water, ions, sugars and amino acids; competition of cells for assimilates and ions; the role of transport proteins in growth and development. 2. Sink organs (especially roots and seeds): transporter density in relation to sink development; modulation by light, temperature and phytohormones. 3. Guard cells: dependence of transport processes on the supply with carbon and nitrogen; regulation by light and temperature; integration of signal pathways. 4. Transport processes of plastids: tissue-specific regulation; interaction of transport and metabolism. 5. General regulatory processes: Influence of membrane lipids on transport proteins; Ca2+ and cyclic nucleotides as second messangers; exocytosis. Plants used for these analyses are Arabidopsis thaliana, Nicotiana tabacum, Solanum tuberosum, Zea mays, Hordeum vulgare and Vicia faba.
