The annual award, which has been held since 2003, seeks to outline the importance of materials for industrial design-oriented applications and to encourage a dialog between material manufacturers, designers and product manufacturers.
The award will be granted by MunichExpo Veranstaltungs GmbH, the organizers of MATERIALICA, the international specialist trade fair for material applications, surfaces and product engineering.
The award ceremony will take place on the occasion of the 11th MATERIALICA on October 14, 2008. All awarded submissions will be presented at the MATERIALICA Design Show in a separate exhibition architecture designed exclusively for this event.

The miniaturization of the current technology of storage media is hindered by fundamental limits of quantum mechanics. A new approach consists in using so-called spin-crossover molecules as the smallest possible storage unit. Similar to normal hard drives, these special molecules can save information via their magnetic state.
