The University of Hildesheim is young and successful and is a popular place to study. Since it was founded in 1978, it has developed a profile of its own and all courses are filled to capacity. The integration of new media and information technology into the range of courses offered, which are oriented towards the arts, has proved especially successful. 994 freshers enrolled for courses at the University of Hildesheim in the winter term 2000/2001 – at a total number of around 4,000 students, this is a new record.
Studies at the University of Hildesheim are practice-oriented and interdisciplinary. Studying here means extending your horizons beyond the close confines of your own subject. There are many ways to make contacts to the world of business and have a head start in your chosen profession. Through international systems of assessment, consecutive study options, modular course structures and a number of classes held in foreign languages, the University of Hildesheim follows the increasing internalisation of society and takes an active part in shaping it. The University of Hildesheim has three main departments: Erziehungs- und Sozialwissenschaften (Education and Social Science), Kulturwissenschaften und Ästhetische Kommunikation (Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Communication) and Information und Kommunikationswissenschaften (Information and Communication Studies). With the introduction of the bachelor course Informationsmanagement und Informationstechnologie (Information Management and Information Technology) in the winter term 2000/01, the latter area was expanded.
