The German Mining Museum (Deutsches Bergbaumuseum, DBM) unique character is made up by the combination of a lively creative museum itself and an innovative efficient research institute. Research activities are focussed on all aspects of the history of mining, its importance as one of the earliest activities of mankind, and its necessity up to the present day. Mining evidence is treated as a research topic within the cultural history of mankind, worth protecting and publicising. In addition, the DBM covers documentation, protection and preservation of cultural heritage related to mining. Research work is performed by scientists specialised in different professions: (mining)archoelogy, archaeometallurgy, history, engineering, information systems and conservation.
The Centre for Documentation of Mining History (Montanhistorisches Dokumentationszentrum) includes the central archive of mining industry in Germany, a specialised library, and collections of geology, mining engineering and (ethno-)archaelogy. Materials analyses are carried out with state-of-the-art instrumentation in a well-equipped laboratory.
