GKSS is one of the fifteen national research facilities that belong to the HGF (Hermann von Helmholtz Society of German Research Centres). Around 700 people are employed at the Research Centre in Geesthacht and its external site at the Institute of Chemistry in Teltow, near Berlin.
The GKSS research centre is one of the fifteen national facilities that make up the Hermann von Helmholtz Society of German Research Centres (HGF). The task of GKSS is to open up and shape strategic areas of future business for the national economy in order to create the basis for the technologies of tomorrow. Around 85% of the annual budget of Euro 65 million is provided by t he German government (90%) and the federal states (10%). Increasingly, additional finance is generated through contracted research and the licensing of our own products and process patents.
Main Subject Areas
The three main areas of research at GKSS involve research and development work which emerges from fundamental investigative experiments, with specific attention paid to the application of these discoveries through the spheres of science, business and society as a whole.
Our close co-operation with universities, businesses and government institutions builds bridges between basic research and useful applications. The research programme is organized into three main subjects:

- Membranes in Process and Biomedical Technology
- Water and Climate in Coastal Regions
