Engineering, Economics and Business Administration and Design are the three main subject areas taught at the Fachhochschule Augsburg. They are subdivided into seven departments. This higher education institution provides young people with an academically-based and practically-development level with the regional business community. Furthermore, the international exchange programmes, in which both the academic staff and students take part, in conjunction with active public relations work, have led to the Fachhochschule Augsburg being regarded as an institution of high standing in the economy and society of the Swabian region of Bavaria.
The Fachhochschule Augsburg was founded in 1971 when the Rudolf Diesel Polytechnic merged with the School of Arts and Crafts. Both these institutions have a long history. The subject of Engineering goes back to the Royal Bavarian Polytechnic teaching establishment, which was founded in 1833, the teaching of Design commenced as far back as 1710 with the opening of the Imperial Art Academy. In 1974, the third and final section was opened with the introduction of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration.
The Fachhochschule Augsburg has a range of special degree courses; the Department of Design and the Department of Computer Studies now offer a course in Multimedia Studies, the degree course in Environmental Technology and Mechanical Engineering is expected to start in October 1998, the Department of Architecture and Construction Studies offer a degree course in Construction and Building Site Management. There is also a range of additional courses including Environmental Engineering Emission Control and Construction Management. A Master of Engineering course is also offered in collaboration with the University of Ulster.
The Fachhochschule Augsburg maintains a wide range of contacts with the regional business community. The professors contribute to this with development projekts which receive support partly from the firms involved and partly from federal institutions or from the European Union. These endeavours are supported by the Technological Institute for Medium-Sized Enterprises at the Fachhochschule Augsburg, which is a registered society.
Within the framework of EU-Programmes, the Fachhochschule Augsburg ist actively involved in the exchanges of students and academic staff with numerous partner universities and colleges throughout Europe. Reciprocal agreements have led to the recognition of most of the academic qualifications acquired abroad. Practical placements can also be arranged abroad.
The Fachhochschule Augsburg coordinates the activities of the Bavarian Fachhochschule institutions within the framework of the special Bavarian-Ukranian Programme in the field of higher education. The Fachhochschule Augsburg is linked to the Technical University of Kiev and the Technical University of Lemberg. It is also involved in two Tempus progammes which are being coordinated in Hungary. As far as the overseas contacts are concerned, particular mention should be made of the partnership with the University of Missouri-Kansas City, which dates back to 1988. Sixty Augsburg students have been able to spend one year in the United States and have been able to benefit from reduced tuition fees.
