Hochschule Karlsruhe <br>Technik und Wirtschaft

The Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences

The University’s roots go back to 1878 and the founding of its predecessor, the Grand Duchy College of Building. The University attained its present form in 1971, when it became a "Fachhochschule", a new type of institution for higher public education established with the specific objective of narrowing the gap between the theoretical world of the lecture theater and the practical world of the workplace. Key elements of the application-oriented curriculum are:

  • courses specifically designed to meet the needs of industry;
  • integrated-traineeships;
  • application-oriented project work and final thesis; and
  • industry experience of teaching staff.

Graduates are highly valued by German industry. In fact, approximately 70% of the professional engineers employed in the high-tech region of Baden-Württemberg are graduates of a "Fachhochschule".

At present, a wide variety of degree programs is offered, primarily in engineering fields. In 1998, the University enrolled approximately 4,500 students, taught by more than 150 full-time faculty and 300 part-time faculty Their work is supported by some 200 technical and administrative staff.

In addition to its commitment to excellence in teaching, the University has a sound research record, its four research institutes and eight technology transfer centers being an important partner for industry. As the business environment has moved toward extensive internationalization, the University has sought to reflect this in its own programs. Co-operation with partner institutions has seen the establishment of international degrees which allow students to obtain dual academic qualifications. Unique certificate programs in major languages are offered by the Foreign Language Institute. Changes in workplace skills and the move towards life-long learning have also led the University to become active in the area of continuing education. The University has also moved to offer bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, some taught in English, so allowing a wider spectrum of students to participate in our programs.
