Fachhochschule as a new type of University

The International Office supports the extension and continuity of international relations at Fachhochschule Kempten. By Definition, a Fachhochschule (FH) is an „institution of Higher Education combining academic studies with work experience, oriented towards the needs of commerce and industry“.

In all the Länder, the Federal States of the Republic of Germany, Fachhoch-schulen, a new type of higher education, were introduced between 1969 and 1971, in the Free State of Bavaria on 1 August 1971. Fachhochschulen constitute a new type of universities, comprising the former Engineering Colleges, Higher Business Colleges, Vocational Schools for Social Professions and Arts Colleges. Together with the Universities and Institutes of Higher Education of the Arts, the Fachhochschulen form the tertiary sector of education as regulated by the Bavarian Law on Higher Education. With their high level of practice-oriented teaching - a fact that is mirrored by two integrated industrial placement semesters - and with their academic teaching staff who must have at least 5 years of practical work experience, the Bavarian Fachhochschulen fulfil, side by side with the universities, an independent educational mission which is oriented towards the special requirements of the labour market.

With their emphasis on practical application of knowledge and with their streamlined and clearly-structured study organisation featuring 6 theoretical and 2 practical semesters as an integral part of the studies, Fachhochschulen provide students whose talents and interests are more on the practical side with a startling variety of educational chances in 4 years of study time only. University education in contrast is generally longer and more oriented towards research and fundamental science. The courses offered at Fachhochschulen are subject to more precise course regulations than the university courses.

Owing to the difference in systems, the term „Fachhochschule“ can only roughly be translated into English, a close descriptive equivalent in English is „University of Applied Sciences“. Although this translation is quite accurate, there are still small differences and therefore Fachhochschulen will be referred to in their German word throughout the text.
