The Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems IMS conducts work on applications of microelectronics and silicon technology.
Its aim is to promote the more widespread use of advanced technology in innovative products and processes in industry, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises. The services it offers include conception, design, prototype manufacturing and testing plus consultancy and training of end users. The three facilities work in close collaboration and coordinate their fields of work, releasing synergies which lead to highly innovative solutions for complex problems.
At the Fraunhofer IMS not only devises and designs integrated circuits, microsystems and distributed electronic systems but also supplies clients with prototypes and limited-run series manufactured »in house«. An additional feature of the range of services is the ability to apply the latest technology to the development of complex electronic systems so that, from the very outset, they can be manufactured and operated particularly cost-effectively.
An important tool here is rapid prototyping which helps to minimize the technology costs. Contracts for this R & D work have been received from companies in the fields of semiconductors, telecommunications, testing and measurement, control systems and automation, vehicle electronics and medical electronics.
The Institute receives support for its projects from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Federal German government, the European Union and other sponsors.
The Institute has a permanent staff of over 150 employees. For its work on research contracts, it has accommodation comprising more than 7,000 m˛ of offices, laboratories and clean-room facilities.
