The Fraunhofer Institute for Non-Destructive Testing IZFP carries out fundamental research in the field of non-destructive testing and makes it possible to transfer the results into practice. The object is to improve the quality and safety of technical products and services.
Key activities include the characterization of material properties for specific use, quality-controlled production and monitoring the operational behavior of products and plant. Starting from physical and metrological principles, suitable measurement methods are developed which provide non-destructive evidence of departures from required quality in the fields of quality assurance, characterization of materials, fault checking, process integration and component monitoring. Work mainly focuses on acoustic, electromagnetic, x-ray, thermal and optical processes. They are optimized under realistic industrial conditions until they are ready for marketing and application and are validated to relevant standards and specifications. Apart from developing customized measuring methods the Institute performs non-destructive measurements for quality assurance purposes in an accredited applications center, mainly for small and medium-sized companies.
Many years of experience in putting the results of research into practice have given the Institute a reputation as a reliable service organization. This is reflected in the large number of clients in Germany and abroad, representing the fields of plant construction, energy and power, the chemical industry, metal production and metalworking, casting, ceramics, the automotive industry, rail transport, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, food processing and environmental engineering. Including temporary student staff and visiting scientists, 280 experts in non-destructive testing are active at the Institute; two thirds of whom are scientists and engineers. Offices, laboratories and technical installations cover an area of approx. 5,300 m2.
