Established in 1992, the Fraunhofer-Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST develops standards, architectures, and concepts for stable, complex long-life systems in the field of information and communication technology. Our partners and principals include firms involved in healthcare, housing, and insurance, as well as classic users of critical IT systems.
The Fraunhofer ISST’s main research areas are Information Logistics, whose goal is a needs-tailored information supply, and Continuous Software Engineering for the design of development-capable, complex IT landscapes. In particular, the institute puts these research emphases into practice in its three business units: eHealthcare, Ambient Assisted Living, and IT in Logistics.
The eHealthcare business unit is dedicated to research into complex information chains both among physicians in different facilities (telematics) in the framework of integrated healthcare provision, as well as in doctor-patient communication (telemedicine). Dealing with sensitive patient data creates special challenges in regard to security, reliability, and the availability of systems with which the institute has long-term experience and extensive expertise. Furthermore, new IT infrastructures lead to new healthcare processes that have to be simulated and supported adequately.
In the Ambient Assisted Living business unit, closely linked to activities in the healthcare field, IT-based services for the homes of health-challenged and elderly individuals are developed, for example through the use of telemonitoring and the documentation of care. The goal is maintaining people’s independence while at the same time protecting their safety. At the center of this effort is an innovative service platform developed by Fraunhofer ISST that coordinates the dissemination of facts about programs and other offerings among service providers, housing companies, and residents. The unit also works on information-logistics systems for highly precise early-warning schemes that offer protection against disasters due to storms, extreme environmental conditions, and technology-related causes. These are combined with the mobile conveyance of individualized locale-relevant information.
The business unit IT in Logistics supports logistics companies and logistics IT suppliers with designing efficient IT landscapes and developing innovative IT-services. Furthermore, in the framework of a Fraunhofer innovation cluster, IT in Logistics is occupied with cloud-computing technologies for logistics. Specifically, the department is taking part in a project entitled »Efficiency Cluster Logistics Ruhr«, sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of its Leading-Edge Cluster Competition (Spitzencluster-Wettbewerb).
In order to bundle knowledge about the newest technologies and tools, the Fraunhofer ISST has operated the Competence Center for Processes and Architectures (COMPARC). This endeavor encompasses all the business units and offers the institute’s clients the possibility to have the newest developments in the fields of service-oriented architectures (SOA) and business process management compared and evaluated.
