The R&D expertise of the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT is primarily addressed toward products and processes in the fields of polymer technology, environmental engineering, electrochemistry and chemical energy sources.
The facilities and expertise focus on the conception, computation and development of products and components, on process technology, on research into materials and constituent substances, on characterization, testing and quality assurance. Feasibility studies carried out by the institute, rapid prototyping, construction and operation of pilot plant, the use of industrial manufacturing techniques, and toolmaking, all emphasize the ICT´s practical orientation. Further expertise is invested in the development of environmentally compatible products and production methods, and in the treatment and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with the principles of resource management and sustainability.
For the last 40 years, the Fraunhofer ICT has been the leading center in Germany for applied research in propellants and explosives, including detonating agents and priming media, solid rocket fuels, gas generators, pyrotechnic devices and propellant charges. Work involves the formulation and synthesis of energetic substances, development of corresponding process technology, characterization and calculation through to construction and system configuration of pilot plant. Detonation and combustion research is carried out, product qualification, and design and implementation of safety systems.
The Fraunhofer ICT is a partner of the Institute for Plastics Testing and Science IKP at the University of Stuttgart and the institute is also home to the renowned Gesellschaft für Umweltsimulation e.V. (GUS). Our R&D work is conducted on behalf of our customers for their specific markets, whereby we pay particular attention to the needs of small and medium-sized companies.
