General information
The Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e. V. (Institute of Polymer Research) is a research institute supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Saxon State Ministry of Science and Art. It was founded in 1992 as a successor institution of the former Institut für Technologie der Polymere (Institute of Polymer Technology).
The IPF is a member of the Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft G. W. Leibniz (former: Blaue Liste institutes).
Application-oriented fundamental research at the institute includes chemical synthesis, modifications, characterization and testing of materials and technological investigations on polymer processing with a particular focus on investigation of the influence of interfaces in multiphase systems and in polymer processing and on deliberate modification of surfaces.
The three subinstitutes of the IPF are engaged in three main research areas:
The heads of the subinstitutes are at the same time professors at the Dresden University of Technology, which ensures close cooperation between the independent institute and the university.
In addition, the IPF co-operates with a number of institutes and research groups dealing with different classes of materials in the Dresden Materials Research Network.
Through a great number of projects - both in fundamental and applied fields - the IPF is integrated into the international scientific community and partner of industrial enterprises. The Association of Supporters of the IPF reflects and promotes the close connections with the industrial sector.
At present the institute has a staff of 318 (51 per cent permanent staff; 49 per cent financed through project or industrial contracts or other additional funds), of which 159 are research fellows including PhD students and 82 laboratory and technical staff in research departments.
Up-to-date facilities (including also pilot plants) provide an excellent basis for successful fundamental and applied research
