Competence Network HIV/AIDS

The Network HIV and AIDS is a national research system combining major study groups in Germany dealing with clinical care as well as clinically oriented basic research of HIV infection and AIDS to improve quality of life and life expectancy of HIV-infected patients. HIV treatment undergoes rapid development being driven by pharmaceutical innovations. German HIV specialists who take care of 40.000 patients in approximately 40 specialized centers for HIV therapy accept and modify these innovations in regional systems, whereas co-ordinated research activities can hardly be identified at the national level. These groups with their local communication structure, interdisciplinary co-operation and well organized access to large number of patients from academic centers and primary care settings do already form isolated networks. Their linkage with groups specialized in immunological, virological, pharmacological, and genetic research is of utmost importance.
