The Institute of Crystal Growth is a public scientific research institute that is funded to 50 % each by the Federal Republic of Germany and the 16 countries of Germany. Another part of its budget comes from third parties, contractual research and various kinds of services. The number of staff members amounts to 80 (±10) on the average. The Institute is a member of the Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz e.V., the formerly so called "Blue list of German scientific institutions. Together with seven other public scientific institutes it is administratively joint within the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V.
The Institute has been founded in 1992 following a recommendation of the Scientific Council of the Federal Republic of Germany. The roots of the Institute lie in the former Centre for the Construction of Scientific Equipment of the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic. Therefore the Institute looks back on a long tradition in the growth and processing of crystals and the development of corresponding methods and equipment. The scientific work of the Institute is periodically evaluated by the Scientific Council of the Federal Republic of Germany. The last evaluation in 1997 acknowledged the Institute´s scientific achievements and recommended the continuation of its activities. An independent Scientific Advisory Board of experts accompanies and evaluates the scientific work of the Institute continuously.
The objective of the Institute´s activities is to grow, to process and to characterize crystals by a number of different techniques. At the same time components for crystal growth equipment are developed and constructed. Furthermore, numerical modelling of crystal growth processes is performed.
The Institute is considered to be a centre of competence for all scientific and technological problems encountered in the growth of bulk crystals. It gathers and cultivates knowledge and capabilities on the growth of crystals by any appropriate phase transition and the corresponding techniques.
As a service facility the Institute develops and supplies crystals, equipment and technologies for co-operating partners and customers.
Furthermore, the Institute is engaged in the education and qualification of crystal growers and the exchange of scientific experiences in the field of crystal growth. The results of the scientific activities are published in internationally acknowledged journals and monographs
