The demands for reduced emissions of pollutants into the environment and for higher efficiency of energy conversion in order to protect the earth’s resources have considerably increased the importance attached to fuel cell technology. With the fuel cell it will be possible to successfully pursue a long-term technology shift in energy conversion. Fuel cell technology is therefore proving to be one of the key technologies for the 21st century. It will have a decisive influence on the restructuring of the energy sector, which is already underway, as well as having an impact on virtually all areas of technology. An efficient research, development and training environment along with the right industrial infrastructure, such as exists in Baden-Württemberg, is essential in shaping this development process.
The Fuel Cell Initiative (BZI) has taken on the task of linking together the expertise in fuel cell technology available in Baden-Württemberg, in order to give decisive impetus to the development process. Wherever technical hurdles need to be overcome, and preparations made for market introduction, strong links must exist between industry and the university and research institutes. Furthermore, it is necessary to maintain in-depth education and training in the natural and engineering sciences, as well as in the craft trades and among users.
For this reason
have joined together to form the Fuel Cell Research Alliance Baden-Württemberg.
In addition to a number of research and university institutes that are considered leaders in education and research on both a national and international level, partners in the alliance also include renowned industrial companies on the global market. Their common goal is to maintain the top position achieved in the area of stationary, mobile and portable fuel cell technology applications, to implement research results on a broad basis and to prepare the market for this technology.
