IHP GmbH - Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics

Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics. Solutions for Mobile Communication/Networking.

Mission

· Enhance the competitiveness of German and European microelectronics
· Establish the region as a high-tech location
· Catalyze innovative developments in the national and European electronics industries

Strategy

· Create value through innovation
· Focus on solutions for wireless communications, networking & multimedia
Seek synergy between materials physics, process technology, circuit design, and systems
· Prototype forward-looking, system-level solutions with secured migration paths into the market

Technology

The IHP technology is strictly focused in Development of High Value Added Technologies for Wireless and Broadband. We offer solutions "From Soup to Nuts", ranging from

· advanced diagnostics capabilities such as XRD, LST, ToFSIMS
· extensive process and device simulation,
· full SiGe:C RF-BiCMOS access in our 200 mm pilot line

to

· ultra high speed and RF power devices for next generation development
· On-Chip passives like R, C, L
· analog and digital design support for RF SoC design.

Our proven SiGe:C HBT module has gained world wide industrial attention and forms an envelope of industrially achieved performance.

We feel well prepared for the forthcoming challenges - formed by the ever increasing demand of RF System-On-Chip design community - where innovativ ULSI Mixed Signal integration meets with agressive scaling.

System Design

The IHP System Design activities are focused on projects from the area of Wireless Internet applications and middleware, protocols for the wireless network, energy optimization, and single-chip wireless engines.

We seek to add value to the Wireless Internet market. We do this by selecting key research areas from the wireless communication domain and working on solutions close to market demands.

We have scientists, Ph.D. students, postdocs, and student workers. We are continuously searching for creative people to join our team and help us achieve our challenging goals.

Circuit Design

The RF Circuit Design activities at the IHP are focused on innovations for future mobile communication using the advantages of SiGe (SiGe:C) technology as appropriate. Future communication bands at high frequencies like 2.4 GHz (Bluetooth) and 5-6 GHz (HIPERLAN), are difficult to manage with standard technologies.

The RF capabilities of our SiGe technology offer the potential to integrate RF blocks with baseband functions on the same chip, thereby reducing cost. Our efforts are currently focused at optimizing all critical transceiver blocks in pure CMOS or SiGe, as appropriate.

In both cases, passive on-chip components, such as spiral inductors and transformers, must be used to deliver the necessary performance at high frequencies.

Using the IHP core competence in SiGe, we are developing key enabler circuits for our systems activities in wireless communication and networking

Breakthrough

The Breakthrough Department has been set up in 1999 to highlight future innovation fields for the IHP. Breakthrough is multidisciplinary, spanning all the institutes fields as materials, process technology, circuits, and systems.

The Breakthrough Department serves as an incubator for ideas and projects pursued to the following goals:

Create innovative solutions that are:

· In front of the IHP Main Strategic Line, but in principle compatible to Mainstream
· Have the potential to add high values

Derive possible directions for future IHP activities from the progress in mainstream technology and upcoming customer needs in wireless communication. Promote ideas of IHP people presuming high reward at high risk. Scientists having innovative and highly risky ideas can work in this department for two years. Successful Breakthrough Projects should result in regular IHP projects or in founding a start-up company.
