| About PTB PTB - the national metrology institute providing scientific and technical services. What are PTB’s capabilities? PTB measures with the highest accuracy and reliability - metrology as the core competence. For whom does PTB work? PTB stands for progress and reliability in metrology for the benefit of society, trade and industry, and science. At the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), not only time is made - we also realise the metre, the kilogram, the newton, the volt... PTB is Germany’s national metrology institute and thus the highest authority for all aspects of correct and reliable measurement. The tasks have been laid down in 27 laws, ordinances and guidelines. They include the realisation, maintenance and dissemination of legal units, the setting-up and development of a uniform, internationally applicable system of units (Système international d’unités (SI)) in cooperation with the other national metrology institutes, and sovereign tasks in the fields of health, safety engineering, consumer protection, industrial safety, radiation protection and environmental protection. As the metrological competence centre PTB is the firsthand contact for customers from science, economy and society. The interests of these different groups of customers are also reflected in the four areas of work of PTB
