Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Center for Medicine and Biosciences

Since its foundation in 1947, the Research Centre Borstel (RCB) has devoted itself to trans-disciplinary, i.e. to diversified research in medical scientific fields. The spectrum comprises medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, immunology, molecular biology and other biosciences. This integrative concept seems to be self-evident, but is not a matter of course in the scientific community and had from its start a supraregional exemplary character. Today, basic and patient-oriented research in pneumology, i.e. in pulmonary and bronchial diseases plays the determining part in the centre´s activities. Research in this field being up to now a scientific deficit in Germany, the RCB is predominantly dedicated to questions of infection, allergy, tumorbiology and chronic, as yet unelucidated inflammations of the lung.

The target of the centre´s clinical scientific work is the improvement of actual and the development of new methods for the recognition, avoidance and treatment of these diseases and thus to place science into the general public service. The RCB also focuses more and more on molecular medicine, which today contributes to impressing progress worldwide. New knowledge about the structure and function of microbial, allergy-triggering and immuno-stimulating components and their interaction with complex biological systems is to be gained on the cellular and molecular level.
