ISAS - Institute for Analytical Sciences

ISAS is an independent research establishment for physico-chemical analysis with a key focus on microfluidics and spectroscopy. It is supported financially by the Federal Government and the German States and is governed by the Society for the Advancement of Spectrochemistry and Applied Spectroscopy. It was under this name the Institute was founded in 1952 in Dortmund, on initiative of the physicist Heinrich Kaiser. In 1992 a department in Berlin-Adlershof was incorporated, and after a scientific re-orientation in 2004 the current name was adopted.

According its statutes, ISAS works towards solving analytical problems and to this end it develops new or improves existing measurement principles and processes, analytical techniques, methods and instrumentation. Its research and development projects aim at applications in material and life sciences.

At present ISAS is organised into five project areas: miniaturization, proteomics, metabolomics, spectroscopy and material analysis. The individual projects within these areas are collected together within the Institute’s research plan, which is assessed annually by a group of scientific experts and the Board of Trustees, both bodies of the Governing Society, and then presented to its Annual Meeting for approval.

Through a collaborative contract and numerous joint activities, ISAS is linked closely to the University of Dortmund, to which the Institute’s Directors are also appointed. ISAS is active in various networks ranging from regional to EU-wide collaborations. Almost all projects are carried out jointly with partners from research institutions in Germany or abroad, from government authorities or from industrial companies.
