Silicon carbide from renewable sources

The invention is a method for the manufacture of high surface area, pure polytype β-silicon carbide derived from renewable sources in a one-step-process. The aim of the invention is to establish an economically efficient and ecologically acceptable method for the synthesis of silicon carbide. Equisetum species (Horsetails) are employed as the precursor of choice because the ideal stoichiometric ratio of silicon dioxide to carbon is already present in the plant. The patented method has also been tried and tested with other renewable sources, such as Miscanthus, Arundo donax, grain husks and parts of rice plants.
