Mesoporous Metal Oxide Films

Background
Many industrial processes rely on metal oxides with high surface area. Thin porous metal oxide films offer unique physical, electrical and magnetic properties with applications in various fields including catalysis, gas sensing and separation, power storage and generation as well as biology and medicine. However, several attempts to prepare alkali and alkaline earth metal oxide films have been unsuccessful.

Technology
We offer an improved method for the production of porous metal oxide films. The metal oxides are prepared by a micelle-templated synthesis via a metal carbonate intermediate. This method enables the fabrication of alkali and alkaline earth as well as rare earth metal oxide films with high surface area.

Benefits

High surface area

Enables the preparation of mesoporous metal oxide films such as:

Alkali metal oxide films (e.g. Li2O)

Alkaline-earth metal oxide films (e.g. MgO)

Rare earth metal oxide films (e.g. ZnO, TiO2, MnO2)

Oxides of other metals (e.g. Al2O3)

Mixed metal oxide films (e.g. BaTiO3)

IP Rights
DE patent application (02/2012)

Patent Owner
Technische Universität Berlin
