4th EuCheMS: FIZ CHEMIE will be showing professional information services for teaching and research

At the 4th EuCheMS (August 26-30) in Prague, FIZ CHEMIE will be showing how professional information services can today efficiently support teaching, research and development in the solving of technical tasks.

EuCheMS is the annual chemistry congress of the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS), an organization of over 40 national specialist associations from 30 European countries. Together, they represent around 150,000 individual members.

This year, using current software technology, new user interfaces are being developed for the ChemInform Reaction Library (CIRX) and ChemgaPedia. FIZ CHEMIE is equipping these popular sources of information with new functions, a new look and simplified navigation structures. In particular, the results of comprehensive user surveys are being incorporated in these developments. At the FIZ CHEMIE booth no.6 in the exhibition, which is being held within the scope of EuCheMS, product managers Dr. Kirsten Hantelmann and Ulrike Schramke will be providing information, using demo versions, on the various changes that are planned.

The highly-developed CIRX and SPORE (Solid Phase Organic Reactions) reaction databases provide targeted help for chemists looking for synthesis pathways for the preparation of new compounds. The databases can be interrogated about structures and substructures individually or in combination with other parameters such as the catalyst, reagent, yield or enantiomeric excess (ee value), and then quickly and accurately deliver suitable reactions and reaction paths. CIRX can supply around 1.5 million reactions published in scientific journals since 1990. The SPORE database has around 47,000 reactions from around 7,000 journal articles and patent specifications available for the planning of syntheses via polymer-bound organic compounds. What makes CIRX and SPORE unique are their reaction schemes. They show the reactions in the context of the original work, thus allowing a quick overview of the applicability of the located reaction for one's own development plans.

ChemgaPedia, the extremely popular eLearning facility from FIZ CHEMIE with over 500,000 accesses each month, will make learning using ChemgaPedia even simpler, more intuitive and interactive for students, through a new look and clear navigation. Available on the platform, which is free to use, are around 1,700 learning units with 18,000 individual pages of chemistry teaching and learning resources. In order to find content in a targeted way and to provide orientation across this wealth of material, ready-prepared thematic and didactic learning paths are offered in addition to full-text searches. This independent-learning facility is supplemented by comment functions and various interactive opportunities. In Prague, with a model of an electrostatic generator and an eLearning terminal, FIZ CHEMIE will be showing how efficiently specialist knowledge from chemistry and its adjacent areas can be vividly conveyed for practical application using the learning units in ChemgaPedia.

The Chemisches Zentralblatt, the most important reference work in chemistry from 1830 to 1969, has been fully digitized by FIZ CHEMIE and, together with their R&D partner InfoChem GmbH, Munich, prepared in such a way that this knowledge can be accessed using the search procedures relevant for chemistry and patent research. At EuCheMS, using the digital version of the Chemisches Zentralblatt, Product Manager Stephan Heineke will be showing the new knowledge that can be obtained from 140 years of printed and published advances in research through redigitization and new search technologies. The full-text search is professionally supplemented by information access using structural and partial-structural searches provided by InfoChem, a partner of FIZ CHEMIE.
